First British freefly tube jump?

Langar, 18th June 2000

Yesterday, I took part in what we believe was the first freefly tube jump over British soil. No, not the tube where you grab somebody's ankle, they grab yours and you tumble into space, but the one with the large windsock.

The 'tubemaster' was Giles Fabris, veteran of many a tube jump in Arizona. Others taking part were myself, Clloydy, Matt Law and Clare Rollason. Mat, Clloydy and myself were on camera, although there was a technical problem with Matt's camera resulting in no footage. Even though I was third out of five, I was last 'in'. Being the least experienced I took it easy, but I got there and what a fantastic site it was!!

We gave Giles a second out of the door, which made for some horizontal separation, but I think us (well, me at least) free-flyers need some lessons for the RWers about getting out of the door tight! On the first jump, we didn't have any floaters as we didn't know what the tube would do.

The tube was made by Giles and his girlfriend Karen, out of old parachute material, a hula-hoop and some tube lagging. As you can see, it flew brilliantly after release and Clloydy got some excellent footage circling it.

Most of these images are from Clloydy's camera, except the first one I think. I dumped my footage to Eddy Smerdon's PC100 yesterday. He captured the stills to the memory stick and emailed them to me. I intend to put more stuff up this evening from both cameras inluding some AVIs/ASFs. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy these. Click on the thumbnail for the larger image. The images are between 60 and 80 k each.
